There are many legends and mystical stories related to Koenigsberg. One of them is about ‘Koenigsberg13’. Numerous esoteric practices and occult studies in search for a wonder weapon took place in the medieval vaults of this secret laboratory. It’s been a while since the city was renamed Kaliningrad, however the echoes of the heritage of Koenigsberg, its history, atmosphere and secrets can still be heard in the music of local bands. ‘Koenigsberg-13’ is a compilation dedicated to the metal scene of the most western region of Russia. It consists of 13 songs by 13 bands playing different genres. The opening track titled ‘Take Your Freedom’ by THE SUNDIAL (gothic doom metal) begins its unhurried narration setting the right mood. The opener is followed by MOONGATES GUARDIAN with its epic black metal. The third track is by RAGAYNA (doom metal), whose lyrics are based on the history of Prussia. Then a new wave of young bands from the coastal area crushes down upon the listeners: THANATOPHAGIA (grindcore) from Pionerskiy and SORGLAND (black metal) from Baltiysk. The calm after the storm comes with a gothic ballad from GERDA’S HEART. Following a short period of calm, the tempest rages on again to the accompaniment of NAR MATTARU (pagan metal). The second half of the CD begins with an atmospheric black metal song ‘Sedmaya Pechat’ (The Seventh Seal) by AUTUMN TALES. Then comes ELDERWINTER — a new evil black metal band from Chernyakhovsk, and REGNAT HORRENDUM (pagan black metal) with Alexander Kantemirov (More Hate Prods.) on vocals. BÄRENKULT (pagan metal) breaks the string of black metal bands with its song titled “Vendskiy Pes” (Wendish Dog). APE ON THE ROCKET wakes another storm wave balancing between prog and black metal. The closing track is a song titled ‘Beside the Rotting River-Strand...’ by BALGA. As a result, ‘Koenigsberg-13’ compilation gives a comprehensive picture of today’s Kaliningrad metal scene!
