MYRGAND "Old Mystical Tales"

Myrkgand is a one-man project run by masterminded Dmitry Luna Nóbrega, who is also an experienced hand in the Brazillian scene. He brought in a lot of talent to help him on this one, with such names like Roland Grapow (ex-Helloween, Masterplan), Liv Kristine (ex-Theatre of Tragedy, etc.), Ashok (Cradle of Filth), and Marcus Sieben (Blind Guardian) all contributing in some way. That sort of makes this akin to an Extreme Metal Avantasia in that regard. Anyway, Old Mystical Tales is a slice of folky Black/ Death Metal that roughly sounds like Cradle of Filth if they became obsessed with mythology and tossed the Gothic romanticism in the trash where it belongs. That said, it is actually rather hard to find suitable comparisons, as the vocal theatrics and instrumental acrobatics that make up this album lead to a fairly novel sound. This is all done with refinement and professionalism, with layers and dimensions that give it an almost narrative feel as it goes along. This is helped by a top-notch production job from Roland Grapow, which is crystal clear and perfectly balanced to give every element on display enough room to breathe. Dmitry clearly had a unique vision for this project, and it led to an entertaining and sometimes captivating work that bodes well for his future. These mystical tales are definitely worth listening to.
